Here at M.S.E. we have just received word that Furuno plans on only manufacturing C-map Navnet VX2 units because of problems with chart redraw times when using Navionics cartography. Please see below. This is a clip from the service advisory we received.
Since the introduction of NavNet vx2, Furuno has offered both Navionics and C-Map versions of this popular product line. The latest release of Navionics MSD Format 2XG/3XG and XL9 Chart Cards contain much more data than previous versions. While existing NavNet vx2 displays will function when these new charts are used, the dramatic increase in data is causing systems to redraw and update at a significantly slower rate than Furuno finds acceptable. This issue is the result of a software and hardware design limitation that cannot be changed. Considering these limitations, Furuno USA will no longer offer Navionics versions of the NavNet vx2 series. It is important to note that Furuno USA will continue to offer and sell the C-MAP versions of the NavNet vx2 products. NavNet vx2 10.4″ systems will remain available throughout 2011, and beyond. NavNet vx2 7″ models, as well as select Black Box (BB) vx2 models, will begin a phasing out process that will continue into 2011. The 1724C/NT is the first model being phased out, and is no longer available for sale from Furuno USA. We will provide separate advisement of other discontinuations as a more definitive time line becomes available.
For customers that wish to stay with Navionics cartography, Navionics has been very cooperative in creating special regions with less area coverage to help mitigate the slow redraw issue. However, even with this change, the redraw and update time for Navionics versions of NavNet vx2 is still not as fast as Furuno USA would expect. Furuno dealers and customers may contact Navionics USA directly for more information regarding these special regions.

Upon turning on your NavNet, you will eventually see a completely black screen containing a disclaimer. At the bottom of the screen, you will see a long list of numbers. Like the picture on the left. This is version 24 of a Navnet 1 (Navionics). Don’t pay any attention to the number after the comma or the numbers before 24. Your version number may be different. Just remember the last two numbers before the comma is what version you’re dealing with. Although it’s always better to get all the digits just in case you mess up. And that’s it. There are a few other ways to find this same number but this one is by far the easiest. The VX2 displays it’s software version the very same way. Just be sure that you tell whom ever you speak to which navnet it is.
While the Furuno FI50 instrument series has met with great success, dealers and customers have commented that a wider variety of innovative NMEA2000 smart sensors was needed to fit more hull types. Furuno listened, and are pleased to announce that they now have (in stock) 4 new transducer models to complement the FI50 instruments. These also offer direct plug-and-play capability for NavNet 3D MFD networks. All transducers are delivered standard with a 6M drop cable for direct connection to an NMEA2000 backbone, or bare-wire connection to the handy Furuno FI5002 junction box.

The new CA82B-35R transducer from Furuno offers a technological advantage not found in other transducers. Its robust ceramic element uses true broadband technology. Simply put, “broadband” describes the ability of a transmitting and receiving element (a transceiver, or in this case the transducer) to operate on a much broader frequency spectrum than traditional, fixed-frequency models. The CA82B-35R frequency response enables the owner to finely tune a Furuno FCV295 or FCV1150 to ANY operating frequency between 65 and 110 kHz at a full 2000 watts output (2KW). With these non-traditional frequencies, you can dial in the sweet spot on the transducer and fish free of all interference from other sounders in your area!
This single fiberglass (FRP) transducer offers completely flexible frequency output on two channels for both the Low and High inputs on our FCV295 and FCV1150 FFS (Furuno Free Synthesizer) Transceiver echosounders. It’s literally like getting two transducers in one! The low profile round face and FRP housing of the transducer make installation on any fiberglass hull a snap, whether in a traditional tank-mount or glassed in to the face of the hull. Tank or keel-shoe mounting is easy on metal hulls as well.
The CA82B-35R is a new transducer with a wide bandwidth of 65kHz-110kHz, and is useable with the FCV292*, FCV1100, FCV1200 and BBFF3. When used with the FCV1100/1200, sensitivity remains high even if the frequency is shifted +/- 10% to suppress interference.
The CA82B-35R may be installed in the tank of the CA88B-10 or CA100B-10R. When retrofitting these or other transducers, the directional pattern and sidelobe characteristics of the beam will be different, and therefore the sounder image may differ from previous installations.

As a new decade begins, it would be hard for any of us to imagine living without consistently available voice and hi-speed data communications. We’re surrounded by these tools everyday, throughout our offices, our homes, as well as when traveling through airports, hotels, and now even airplanes. Now, shipboard personnel can enjoy these same services and conveniences by fitting the all-new Furuno FELCOM500 Inmarsat FleetBroadband Satellite Communications Terminal.
Just as on-shore broadband data communications paved the way for the “Hi-Speed” era, FleetBroadband represents a quantum leap in terms of marine satellite communication speeds. With its data capability of up to 432 kbps, the FELCOM500 delivers more than three times the maximum speed of a Fleet 77 system, truly altering and greatly improving the way mariners and vessels communicate.
Furuno’s Inmarsat FleetBroadband FELCOM500 delivers a fast and cost-effective solution to maritime broadband data and voice communications on a global basis. Once installed, FleetBroadband will transform a vessel into a “floating office”, where simultaneous access to voice and multiple high-speed data services are always available. This constant communication accessibility will certainly improve onboard operational efficiency, as well as the crew’s social interaction while at sea. Navigators can obtain weather and other updates online in order to optimize their route planning and monitoring tasks, while everyone onboard will enjoy the benefits of the Internet, E-mail, SMS text messaging, and VoIP calls to their offices, friends, and family back home… all from a single, economically priced terminal.
Here are some of the other great features of the all-new FELCOM500…
- Simultaneous access to voice and high-speed data communications
- Global coverage provided through 3 Inmarsat-4 satellites (except polar regions)
- IP handset and IP-PBX incorporated
- Multiple IP handsets can be connected to the network through an Ethernet hub
- Wireless IP phones can be utilized (wireless LAN access points required)

Furuno is pleased to announce an update to the USA NOAA data
supplied for all NavNet 3D systems. The MapMedia “NOAA Edition 3″
charts include the following enhancements:
• NOAA Vector Charts (S57):
This major update adds 18 new Vector
Charts to the library. The entire NOAA Vector Chart Library has been
optimized to improve chart scale density on NavNet 3D displays. A 300%
to 400% increase in chart detail and related reduction in chart boundary
quilting will be seen at most chart scales.
• NOAA Raster Charts:
The NOAA Raster Edition 3 is a minor update from Edition 2. It corrects
specific rare “tiles” problems that can appear on some ranges. These problems
have been reported on the Intra-Coastal Waterway and around the Great Lakes.
• Fishing Charts:
Fishing Charts for the East and West coast of the USA are now available. These new
Fishing Charts provide detailed bathymetric contour for the most popular fishing locations.
Please note: This is not a Furuno Warranted update. If you would like new charts installed Please call us here at Mid-Shore Electronics and we can provide this update service for you.
